referencing The David Grisman Quintet, LP, Album, F-5 Not really a bluegrass album at all even if the players are known for that style and the instrumentation would imply as much-- musically it has more in common with 70's fusion and progressive rock than with bluegrass.

Again, the DGQ has given us a C.D. of "dawg music" that combines the best of jazz, classical, and mountain string music. The entire C.D. can be enjoyed as "background" music, but it is difficult to listen to it without being distracted to it because of all the intricate solos and complicated duets, trios, etc/5(4).

The David Grisman Quintet's eponymous debut was a stunning achievement, capturing a pivotal point in newgrass history. It was a record that opened up new rhythmic textures and instrumental textures, specifically new, jazzier ways to solo.
